Logistics

Logistics Management, as defined by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), is “that part of supply chain management that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective forward and reverse flow and storage of goods, services, and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers' requirementsī.

At Oulu Business School, Logistics can be studied as a main subject in a M.Sc. programme that is intended for students who have already completed their bachelorīs degree in a university, college or polytechnic. The programme consists of 120 ECTS credits which typically means 2-3 years of study.

Students who graduate from logistics typically find jobs in the business community as logistics or supply chain managers responsible for planning material flows and logistics processes inside the company and towards the suppliers and customers. Purchasing and procurement positions are also well suited for logistics professionals. The growing service industry both in the business and public sectors can greatly benefit from the expertise accomplished in logistics studies.

Logistics can also be studied as a minor study module (25 ECTS points). The module consists of basic studies in logistics that can be complemented with optional studies from closely related courses in other areas of business management.

Logistics research is multi-disciplinary and employs multiple methods. There is a growing tendency to use qualitative methods, e.g. case studies, in addition to the quantitative studies traditionally employed in logistics research. However, also optimization and simulation studies are again gaining popularity in logistics research and education as affordable and user-friendly software packages are coming to the market. At the Oulu Business School, the central themes in logistics research include logistics services, supply chain/network management and transport studies. The goal is to conduct research of high international standards, with a special emphasis on national and international research cooperation.
